Karin Moorhouse: Artist & designer
Karin has had studios in Chelsea, Covent Garden, Battersea and Surrey but for the last 25 years she has lived and worked in West Sussex. She remains continually inspired by her surroundings there, though London specifically and urban scenes generally, still hold a place in her heart and these influences are seen in her paintings.
For Karin it has always been the creative process that has been as important as the final work and changes occur regularly during the painting. At times she will work over older paintings which will then be incorporated into the new ones. She started life as a textile designer and following her roots pattern has been included in some of her work.
Karin has exhibited many times at The Mall Galleries, London and has been part of mixed shows at Pallant House and The Oxmarket Galleries both in Chichester, Dragon and Kevis House Galleries both in Petworth and has been a regular participant in the annual Arundel and Brighton Festivals and Gallery Trails. Her work is in several private collections around the world and she has run painting workshops in Mallorca, Italy, France and more recently on the beautiful island of Madeira. Over the years she has taught in schools, 6th form colleges, art schools and for the last few years has been running regular courses at The Mill Studios, Ford, Arundel, BN18 0EF. How The Light Gets In
In this collection I am seeking to capture the complexity and transience of light play and reflections. People, places and plants have always held my attention and I am fascinated by the effect of sunlight passing over my subjects. Shadow shapes, which are cast by light, create areas of separate identity and can even disguise the subject. I find this continually exciting. My subject matter can change as I develop further areas of interest but, when I am ‘hooked’, I explore deeply and become very involved with my subject.

Workshops
We are now well established with the new format short courses, and I am happy to invite you to look at the 2025 time table. As a reminder, instead of the three terms of weekly sessions per year, we are now running a programme of 3 day short courses.
Each of these courses will be open to both the Art of Drawing and the Oil Painting groups, and each Short Course will have a theme. Each themed 3 Day Course will, as always, focus on personal one-to-one tuition, as well as group learning. There are opportunities for you to join these courses even if you would prefer to work on your own projects. I hope these changes deliver the best of both worlds for everyone.
Both the Oil Painting and the Art of Drawing courses are long standing favourites, well known to many, and now there will be opportunity for these two groups to meet and work together.
So to give you a taster of the themes we have chosen for the new 2025 workshops here are the titles of a few which we will be running:
- Drawing and painting the South Downs landscape.
- The Portrait, Still Life with a difference.
- The Urban/Built Landscape, Winter Trees.
See the details for each course further on.
The Mill Studio is very much open and looking forward to either welcoming you as a new student or to saying “hi, great to see you again!”
The Courses
The new short courses, each running for three days, will cover a theme and will also offer the opportunity to work on your own projects within the group setting. During the studio sessions there will as always be group discussions and appraisals of the work going on.
Each day will run from 10am to 4pm with breaks for coffee, tea and lunch. Teas, coffee and biscuits will be provided. Please bring your own lunch.

Drawing and Painting Winter Trees in the Landscape
On this first course of 2025 we will be exploring the highlights and shadow shapes of the winter landscape. Think large scale. Think charcoal or one colour + black and white in oils. Without the camouflage of Summer we can clearly see the patterns and shapes of bare branches all round the Mill Studio or, if you wish, from drawings made before the course begins.

Drawing and Painting the Portrait
On this three day course we will be working from life with a portrait model on the first day, working on self-portrait on the second day, and working from photos on the final day or, if you prefer, to continue with the life portrait work or your self-portrait.
This course has a supplement fee of £15 to pay towards the model’s fee.

Drawing and Painting Everyday Objects
On this 3 day course we will be looking at everyday objects that we all use, but looking at them differently; in bright colours; in their absolute simplicity of shape and in odd groupings. Think of Michael Craig Martin’s work and use his clarity and humour as inspiration in your own unique way. Objects will be set up around the Mill Studio for you to work on or if you prefer, bring in your own favourite objects from around your home.
- Tuesday 29 April
- Wednesday 30 April

Drawing and Painting the Landscape Towards Abstract
We will begin this 3 day course up at Burpham Village Green (close to a very good pub called the George!) where we will immerse ourselves in the stunning South Downs landscape. For the following two days we will move back home to The Mill Studio where we will work on the drawings and paintings made on the first day of Plein Air work and develop them into more abstract final pieces. Burpham village hall will be at our disposal for the first day to ensure the flow of teas and coffees and where, if the weather is too bad to work outdoors, the Downs can be observed through the windows. Hopefully we will not have that scenario though!
- Tuesday 8 July
- Wednesday 9 July
- Thursday 10 July
Each day will run from 10am to 4pm

Drawing and Painting the Built Landscape
We will begin this 3 day course on site in St Nicholas Church, London Road, Arundel which is a fine example of perpendicular gothic architecture. Big words for a big building, but don’t be put off! Inside and outside of any large ornate building we can all find areas, corners or views which appeal to us. On this first day we will make drawings in black and white or colour (no paint permitted inside the church however for obvious reasons) which we will then take back to The Mill Studio to develop into final pieces. The drawings don’t have to be large scale; you may wish to focus all your attention on small details. There is something for everyone here and Arundel is awash with cafes and takeaways for supplies of the necessary drinks and snacks.
- Tuesday 9 September
- Wednesday 10 September
- Thursday 11 September
Each day will run from 10am to 4pm

Drawing and Painting the Still Life - With a Difference
While the artist Morandi was fascinated by groupings of related shapes, his eye focused keenly on the spaces in-between the objects. With Still Life arrangements of pots and vases set up at The Mill Studio during this 3 day course we will observe the spaces in-between the objects, which are referred to as the "Negative Shapes"". Seeing these shapes clearly is as important as observing the shapes themselves and ensures that everything is in its right place and is the right size within the still life set-up.
